Description

Pair of Old Thapanom Temple Figures – Thailand, ca. 1870

This impressive pair of Thapanom temple guardian figures originates from Thailand and dates to around 1870. Carved from heavy hardwood, each figure stands gracefully with hands in the anjali mudra gesture of reverence and devotion.

The statues retain traces of original gilding and polychrome, with natural surface wear that reflects their age and ritual use. Their elegant crowns, elongated features, and flowing garments are typical of 19th-century Thai temple art, where such figures were placed at entrances or altars as protectors and symbols of piety.
