Wooden Relief Panel Depicting Shiva – India, 19th Century lot 451
Hand carved wooden relief panel depicting the Hindu deity Shiva, seated in a classical yogic posture. India, 19th century. Originally made for wall mounting within a domestic shrine or temple interior.
This hand carved wooden relief panel depicts the Hindu deity Shiva, shown seated in a composed yogic posture within a stylised architectural niche. The carving is executed in high relief from a single wooden panel, with a flat reverse, confirming its original function as a wall mounted devotional object rather than a free standing sculpture.
The iconography, proportions and carving style are consistent with Indian religious woodwork from the 19th century. The surface displays natural wear, patina and age related marks developed through prolonged devotional use. No modern repainting or artificial aging is observed. A later metal hanging fitting is present on the reverse and does not affect the authenticity or structure of the object.
Such panels were commonly used in household shrines or small temple interiors, serving as focal points for daily worship. The piece represents an authentic example of traditional Indian devotional craftsmanship.
