Description

Fire-Gilded Bronze Shiva Nataraja – Ladakh

This remarkable fire-gilded bronze depicts Shiva Nataraja, the cosmic dancer, crafted in Ladakh or the West-Himalaya during the mid-18th century. Standing 43 cm high and 38 cm wide, with a weight of 5.8 kg, it is a rare example of Himalayan adaptation of South Indian Chola prototypes.

The figure is hollow-cast using the lost-wax method, with traces of vegetal and sandy filler still present inside. Under UV light, the surface fluoresces in a granular yellow-green pattern, confirming aged fire-gilding. Microscopic analysis shows natural oxidation, stratified surface patina, and no synthetic coatings. These features verify its authenticity and ritual use.

Shiva is shown performing the tandava dance: one hand holds the drum of creation, another the flame of destruction, with the abhaya mudra raised in protection and the lower left hand pointing to his raised foot, symbolizing liberation. He tramples Apasmara, the dwarf demon of ignorance. The multiple-headed naga crown and perforated back plate are distinctive Himalayan features.
