Description

This striking bronze Shiva Nataraja statue, standing 33.5 cm tall, originates from the Ladakh region in Northern India, and dates to circa 1900–1930. It is cast in the traditional segment-mould technique, and retains partial fire-gilding, visible under 365nm UV light as a green-yellow fluorescence — a hallmark of authentic mercury-based gilding.

The deity is shown performing the Ananda Tandava, the cosmic dance of creation and destruction, while trampling the demon Apasmara – depicted here in a stylized, helmet-headed form typical of Himalayan adaptations. The open flaming halo, balanced composition, and expressive features reflect a regional Ladakhi-Chola fusion style.

Microscopic inspection confirms:

  • Crystalline corrosion and oxidation

  • Natural age patina with no synthetic coatings

  • Interior filled with coarse temple sand and organic residue, showing ritual use

This piece is more than decorative; it holds deep symbolic meaning in Shaivite Hinduism, representing the balance of cosmic cycles and the power of transformation. A rare find with devotional authenticity and historic charm.
