Fire-Gilded Bronze Nataraja (Shiva), South India lot 447
Fire-gilded bronze Nataraja (Shiva) in the classical dancing pose, surrounded by a flaming aureole. The sculpture shows natural wear with surviving remnants of original mercury fire-gilding and a naturally developed patina. Traditional hollow-cast bronze, pre-industrial, with correct Shiva iconography including the cobra headdress and ritual hand marking.
This fire-gilded bronze sculpture represents Shiva in his Nataraja form, the cosmic dancer who embodies creation, destruction and renewal. The figure is shown dancing within a circular aureole of flames, a central element of Nataraja iconography, symbolising the eternal cycle of the universe.
The bronze was traditionally hollow cast using the lost-wax method and subsequently fire-gilded with mercury amalgam. Microscopic examination shows gold embedded within the natural surface texture rather than lying as a uniform layer, while UV inspection reveals irregular yellow-green fluorescence consistent with historic fire-gilding residues. These characteristics exclude modern decorative coatings and confirm an older, pre-industrial manufacturing process.
Natural wear has softened the surface over time, with gilding remaining primarily in protected recesses while exposed areas show a mature brown patina. The iconography is complete and coherent, including the cobra headdress associated with Shiva and a ritual hand marking engraved into the palm, reinforcing the religious function of the image.
With its balanced proportions, correct symbolism and surviving evidence of original fire-gilding, this Nataraja stands as an authentic example of South Asian Hindu bronze sculpture, suitable for a serious collection focused on religious and ritual art.
