Hand-Carved Wooden Mohini Statue – South India, ca. 1900–1925 (H 60 cm)
Description
This exquisite South Indian statue depicts Mohini, the only female incarnation of the Hindu god Vishnu, known for her divine beauty and role in cosmic balance. Carved around 1900–1925 from tropical hardwood—likely jackfruit wood—this sculpture stands 60 cm tall and weighs approximately 2.2 kg.
Mohini is shown in a majestic upright stance, with four arms, a tall crown (kiritamukuta), and a radiating back halo (prabhamandala). Her right hands express reassurance (Abhaya Mudra) and generosity (Varada Mudra), while the upper hands hold vertical attributes—possibly lotuses or ritual emblems. The carving is detailed on all sides, indicating it was meant for freestanding display in a household or temple altar.
Microscopic examination confirms its authenticity, showing no synthetic varnishes or modern tooling. The surface displays natural patina, oxidation, and minor aged deposits. A green felt base was added post-1950 for protection, but the sculpture remains untouched in terms of structural or visual restoration.
This is a rare and symbolically rich representation of a complex figure in Hindu theology—where Mohini embodies divine intelligence, illusion (maya), and protective beauty. A museum-worthy piece of spiritual and artistic heritage from early 20th-century South India.
