Description

Bronze Figure of Durga Mahishasuramardini – South India, ca. 1700–1800

This powerful bronze sculpture represents Durga Mahishasuramardini, the fierce manifestation of the goddess Durga as she slays the buffalo demon Mahishasura. Standing in a victorious pose atop the subdued demon, she holds symbolic weapons in multiple arms—a representation of divine strength and protection.

Crafted in South India (likely Tamil Nadu or Karnataka) around the 18th century, the piece was solid cast using traditional sand-casting techniques. The bronze surface has developed a natural greenish patina with crystalline oxidation, confirming long-term age and use. No modern restorations, lacquers, or artificial patinas are present.

This sculpture belongs to regional devotional art rather than formal temple bronzes, giving it a unique folk aesthetic: a broad nose, simplified crown, and compact proportions speak to a village-based origin. Despite its modest size (H 13.6 cm x W 8 cm), it radiates the fierce grace of the goddess Durga in her most revered mythological form.
