Validation Report
This nineteenth-century Thai bronze Buddha in Bhumisparsha mudra was examined using museum-grade analytical methods, including UV-based surface review, microscopy and interior cavity observation. The sculpture is solid cast in pre-industrial bronze and shows multi-layer natural patina with cuprit, tenorite and malachite development across recessed zones. The right hand displays refined hand-modelled construction with fully sculpted finger transitions and a hollow underside, indicating higher workshop quality within the Ayutthaya–Rattanakosin transition. The interior cavity preserves mineralised oxidation, casting texture and long-term age behaviour without modern filler, coating or reconstruction.

Thai Bronze Buddha in Bhumisparsha Mudra, Late Ayutthaya–Early Rattanakosin, 19th Century
Description
This 19th-century Thai bronze Buddha represents the transitional style between late Ayutthaya and early Rattanakosin workshops. The sculpture shows balanced proportions, a calm facial expression, and a well-defined lotus base typical of high-quality temple bronzes of the period.
One of the defining features of this piece is the exceptional hand modelling. The downward-reaching right hand displays fully three-dimensional sculptural quality: natural finger curvature, visible knuckle formation, clear nail transitions, and a fully hollow underside. This level of detail is associated with higher-grade pre-industrial casting and is rarely seen in later mass-produced bronzes.
The patina is original and naturally developed, consisting of cuprit, tenorite, and subtle malachite tones scattered across the surface. The oxidation extends deep into folds and recesses, confirming long-term ageing. The overall presence and stylistic clarity make this statue an authentic and well-preserved example of 19th-century Thai Buddhist art.
