TAX3 – Technical Assessment
This sculpture depicts Siddhartha Gautama in classic Mandalay style, cast in bronze and originally finished with 24k gold leaf applied through the traditional mercury-amalgam gilding method. Microscopic examination confirms the presence of granular high-purity gold remnants, natural abrasion fields, oxidation pockets and age-consistent lacquer residues. No indicators of modern restoration, chemical patination or mechanical interference were observed.
The casting exhibits the typical features of late 19th-century Burmese Mandalay craftsmanship: a smooth, fine-grained bronze alloy, soft robe modelling, controlled tool marks and an overall mature surface structure. Internal inspection of the base confirms original ritual filling composed of compacted soil, mineral grit and organic deposits. The stratification and dryness correspond with long-term temple use.
Patina development follows natural ageing patterns. Darkened bronze zones alternate with surviving gilded areas, showing uninterrupted structural continuity. The remaining 24k gilding displays the characteristic matte granular microstructure produced by mercury-amalgam evaporation and slow oxidation. UV and microscopy reveal no synthetic coatings or recent consolidants.
Construction, material, surface development and filling composition collectively support a dating of the late Mandalay period, approximately 1880–1920, within Burma/Myanmar. The sculpture retains its original devotional integrity and technical authenticity.

24k gold Siddhartha Gautama Mandalay Buddha
Description
This finely cast Mandalay-style Buddha statue represents one of the most recognisable artistic traditions of nineteenth-century Myanmar. With a height of 37 cm and a width of 26 cm, the sculpture has a harmonious and balanced presence, making it suitable both as a decorative object and as a meaningful spiritual icon. The figure is modelled in bronze and still preserves large, authentic traces of its original gilded surface. The natural wear reveals the dark bronze beneath, creating a beautiful contrast between the warm golden highlights and the deeper tones of the aged metal.
The Buddha is depicted in the classic seated posture with crossed legs, the hands placed in the Bhumisparsha Mudra. This gesture, with the right hand touching the earth, refers to the moment of Siddhartha Gautama’s enlightenment, when he called the earth to witness his victory over illusion. It is one of the most profound and widely revered mudras in Buddhist art, symbolising steadfastness, clarity and the triumph of insight.
Typical of the Mandalay tradition, the body has soft, rounded contours, a gentle curvature at the shoulders and a calm, introspective facial expression. The high ushnisha, the stylised curls of the hair and the elegantly draped monastic robe reflect the characteristic forms developed in the late Konbaung period. The lotus throne is rendered with care, showing the layered, architectural base associated with Burmese craftsmanship of the late nineteenth to early twentieth century.
The surface of the sculpture shows natural ageing consistent with its period: worn gilding, areas of dark patination and subtle irregularities from long-term ritual handling. These qualities give the statue an authentic presence and a sense of lived history, while the remaining gilding retains a warm, luminous glow that enhances the figure’s visual impact.
This Mandalay-style Buddha is not only a decorative object but also a contemplative piece that brings a sense of tranquillity and depth to any environment. Whether displayed in a living space, meditation room or private collection, it offers an elegant combination of cultural heritage, spiritual significance and timeless aesthetic appeal.
