Description
18th Century Fire-Gilt Buddha Statue – Northern Thailand (Lanna Region)
This exceptional Buddha statue originates from Northern Thailand (Lanna region) and dates to the 18th century (ca. 1750–1800). The Buddha is shown seated in Bhumisparsha mudra (earth-touching gesture), symbolizing enlightenment. The pedestal features an openwork elephant-frieze base—an extremely rare and highly symbolic motif.
The surface retains authentic fire-gilding (mercury-gilding), confirmed under UV analysis and microscopy. Areas of original gold layer are preserved alongside natural patina, copper corrosion, and black mineral encrustation. Internal filling includes calcification, salt efflorescence, and organic residue confirming ritual use.
The statue is hollow-cast using the lost-wax method, with no modern restoration. Microscopic inspection revealed a mineralized plant-based strand trapped beneath the gilding layer, confirming original pre-modern workshop methods.
