Validation Report (VR1)

This object was examined using museum-grade analytical methods, including macro inspection, UV review, and surface structure analysis. All observed characteristics are consistent with a traditionally carved Himalayan wooden ritual mask from Nepal, dating to the 19th–early 20th century.

The hardwood shows natural oxidation, deep drying cracks, hand-cut tool marks, and long-term surface wear typical of rural Himalayan production. No modern coatings, pigments, or restoration traces were detected. The stylistic form—oval eyes, block-shaped nose, and rough mouth carving—corresponds to documented Nepalese protective and ceremonial village masks.

Description

This traditional wooden ritual mask originates from the Himalayan region of Nepal. It is carved from a single block of naturally aged hardwood, showing the irregular surface, tool marks, and deep weathering typical of village craftsmanship. The form is simple and expressive, with hand-cut eyes, a straight block-shaped nose, and an open mouth used for both performance and protective functions.

The surface shows long-term oxidation and natural drying cracks, consistent with masks used in rural settings throughout the 19th–early 20th century. These masks were placed in homes, stables, or used during local festivals to invoke protection and ancestral presence.

A well-preserved and authentic example with strong character and traditional Himalayan proportions.
