Description

Buddhist Thangka of Karma and Hell Realms – Nepal, ca. 1950–1970

This unusual Nepalese Buddhist painting illustrates karmic consequences and lower realms, drawing on motifs related to the Bhavachakra (Wheel of Life) and regional narrative traditions. The work was produced in the mid-20th century in the Kathmandu Valley, painted on cotton canvas with traditional pigments typical of Nepalese workshop production of that period.

Two Nepal export stamps and wax-seal remnants on the reverse confirm that the piece was legally exported during the 1960s–70s, placing its creation safely before that time. The pigments and brushwork show the characteristic handmade quality of mid-century Nepalese devotional art.

Origin: Nepal, Kathmandu Valley

Period: ca. 1950–1970

Material: Cotton canvas, traditional pigments

Dimensions: ca. 18 × 14 cm

Mounting: Original textile mount no longer present

Such narrative paintings were used in local teaching contexts to illustrate moral themes, karmic cycles, and rebirth imagery. The preserved condition, early export documentation, and uncommon subject matter make this an interesting example of mid-20th-century Nepalese Buddhist art.
