Shankha Buddha – Small Bronze Figure Emerging from Conch Shell

Description

This small bronze figure represents the Buddha emerging from a conch shell (shankha), an ancient symbol of the primordial sound and the spreading of the Dharma. The composition is rare within Southeast Asian iconography, connecting cosmological imagery with the idea of enlightenment rising from the depths of the ocean.

The surface shows natural oxidation and fine mineral deposits, confirming the piece was never gilded or lacquered. Microscopic and UV examination revealed no modern interventions, synthetic coatings, or restorations. The object is cast in a traditional sand mould, characteristic of Northern Thai and Lao bronzes of the late Lan Na–Ayutthaya period.

At only 7.1 cm in height and 100 g in weight, this miniature was likely intended for personal devotion rather than temple use. Its refined modelling and serene form express a delicate devotional craftsmanship rarely preserved in such condition.
