Early Shan Wooden Buddha Statue ca. 1700–1800, Burma (Myanmar)
Description
This early Shan wooden Buddha statue from Burma (Myanmar) dates to ca. 1700–1800 and is carved from tropical hardwood that has undergone extensive natural aging. The surface retains fragmented remains of original polychromy, visible under UV as organic yellow and mineralised white responses. The internal cavity shows collapsed fibres, salt crystals and centuries-old erosion typical for pre-industrial Southeast Asian temple wood.
The facial modelling, elongated crown, seated posture and simplified robe lines correspond to early Shan traditions, predating the later Mandalay refinements. No modern fillers, coatings or toolmarks are present. An old UK export seal indicates mid-20th-century export of a piece that was already antique at that time.
This sculpture represents an authentic historical devotional object with strong character, age and presence.
