Burmese Nat Spirit Figure – Early 19th Century Folk Art in Teak (H 34 cm)
Description
This rare antique teakwood figure represents a Burmese nat, a protective spirit from the syncretic folk-Buddhist tradition of Myanmar. Dating from ca. 1800–1840, the carving is a beautiful example of early 19th-century rural craftsmanship, sculpted from a single block of dense teak and finished with polychrome mineral pigments in red, blue, and black.
The figure stands 34 cm high and 10 cm wide, and weighs approximately 700 grams. The right hand is raised in a gesture of blessing or invocation — a symbol of spiritual guardianship and benevolence. These figures were traditionally placed in household altars or village shrines to offer protection from illness, misfortune, and harmful forces.
