Mandalay Buddha Statue – 19th Century, Burma (Original Gold Leaf & Glass Inlays)

Description

This antique Mandalay Buddha originates from Burma (Myanmar), dating to the late 19th century. The sculpture is carved from dense hardwood and decorated with multiple layers of original 24 kt gold leaf applied over a traditional Burmese lacquer and red mineral bole preparation.

Hand-set glass inlays embellish the robe and sacred adornments. Many remain intact, and areas of loss show natural aged recesses with oxidized patina. UV and microscopic examination confirm the authenticity of the gilding system, the mineral-based pigments, and the deep, stratified age patina in protected zones. The face preserves its original serene expression, with naturally aged craquelure.

A small old repair is present at the hand attachment, consistent with ritual handling in a temple context. No modern repainting or synthetic fillers detected.
