Description

This authentic Mandalay temple Buddha (Konbaung Dynasty, ca. 1850–1870) is carved from dense tropical hardwood and decorated using the traditional Burmese lacquer-gilding technique. The gold surface consists of hand-beaten 24 kt gold leaf applied over a natural lacquer base, producing a rich and brilliant finish characteristic of Mandalay workshop production in the mid-19th century.

Hand-cut glass and shell inlays add jewel-like highlights across the robe, reflecting the opulent style of royal and temple patronage in Mandalay. The inlaid eyes combine natural shell with original black lacquer backing, confirmed under UV light and microscopy.

Structural analysis reveals hand-forged iron pins joining the wooden sections, deep oxidation inside the core, and dust-filled recesses consistent with genuine ritual temple use. No modern restoration materials were observed.
