Description

Bronze Avalokiteshvara (Lokeshvara)

This bronze figure represents Avalokiteshvara, the bodhisattva of compassion, one of the most revered figures within Mahayana and Vajrayana Buddhism. Avalokiteshvara embodies infinite mercy and the vow to assist all sentient beings on their path toward liberation from suffering. His presence in Buddhist practice is closely associated with compassion, protection, and spiritual guidance.

The figure is depicted seated in lalitasana, the relaxed royal posture with one leg pendant. This posture symbolises active compassion: the bodhisattva is not withdrawn from the world, but ready to rise and respond to the needs of beings. The richly modelled crown and jewellery identify Avalokiteshvara as a bodhisattva rather than a Buddha, reflecting his enlightened status combined with continued engagement in the worldly realm.

In Tibetan and Himalayan Buddhist traditions, Avalokiteshvara is regarded as the spiritual protector of Tibet and is closely connected to the mantra Om Mani Padme Hum, which expresses the transformation of ignorance into wisdom through compassion. Images such as this are traditionally used as focal points for meditation, devotion, and contemplation, serving as visual reminders of compassion, patience, and ethical conduct.

The warm golden appearance enhances the sacred character of the figure and reflects the traditional association of light and purity with enlightened qualities. The compact scale makes the image suitable for a personal altar, meditation space, or quiet interior setting where contemplation and symbolism are central.
