Lakshmi (Sri Devi) – South Indian / Sri Lankan Antique Bronze – 46.5 cm
Description
This antique bronze figure represents Sri Devi (Lakshmi), the South Asian goddess of prosperity and protection. Cast in South India or Sri Lanka during the 18th–19th century, it shows the classic features of traditional bronzes from this region: a tall slender body, full chest, a long organic lotus stem, high ankle ornaments, and a vertically pleated garment shaped to the natural line of the legs.
The goddess stands with a calm, balanced posture, her right hand lowered in a gesture of generosity. The left hand supports a long lotus stem with a rounded bud, a symbol of purity and abundance central to Sri Devi iconography. The lotus is modelled with natural segmented growth rather than as a flat stylized line, typical for Sri Lankan and Tamil devotional bronzes. Her face has softly rounded cheeks, a short nose, and gently arched brows. The tall crown with small spiral motifs reflects late-Kandyan and Tamil craftsmanship. Around the ankles she wears the distinctive high padasara ornaments, a feature found only in South Asian goddess sculpture.
The bronze surface shows a naturally aged patina developed through long-term devotional use. Under magnification the surface displays copper-oxide layers, mineral accretions, and stable green encrustations. The statue was never gilded; the dark brown and black tones are original and shaped by centuries of handling and environmental exposure. With a height of 46.5 cm and a weight of 4.6 kg, the sculpture has a strong, elegant presence. It is a well-preserved example of Sri Devi iconography, suitable for collectors of South Asian bronzes and historic Hindu goddess figures.
