Description

Colonial-Period Bronze Buddha on Lotus Base, India–Burma, ca. 1900–1930

This solid-bronze Buddha represents a serene meditating figure seated upon a double-row lotus pedestal. The head follows South-Asian models with full features and extended earlobes, while the robe shows East-Asian flowing drapery typical of colonial-era ateliers in Rangoon or Calcutta. The stylistic blend reflects the cross-regional artistic exchange of Buddhist sculpture in the early twentieth century.

Technical characteristics: Cast in a single piece using traditional sand-casting; hand-finished surface with visible file and tool marks under magnification. Natural brown-olive patina with minor carbonate encrustation confirms age and oxidation. No evidence of modern coating or restoration.

Iconography: The Buddha is depicted in Dhyanamudra (meditation pose), draped in a monastic robe with long, parallel folds. Absence of urna corresponds to simplified devotional bronzes from the colonial period. The beaded lotus base with thick petals aligns with early Indian-Burmese casting traditions.
