18th Century Reclining Bronze Buddha – Lan Na / Rattanakosin (Thailand)

Description

This impressive reclining Buddha statue originates from Northern Thailand and dates to approximately 1750–1800. Crafted in high-copper bronze using traditional hollow-casting techniques, the figure depicts the Buddha in Parinirvana — the moment of his final liberation. This posture, lying on the right side with a gentle smile and supported head, symbolizes peace, transcendence, and the end of suffering.

The statue shows unmistakable signs of age, including green-blue copper oxidation (malachite and azurite), crystalized patina, bronze corrosion pits, and traces of manual repairs around old perforations. These characteristics confirm its 18th-century origin and long devotional use.

The piece is stylistically aligned with the Lan Na and early Rattanakosin traditions, evident in the facial features, robe folds, and hair curls. A rare and powerful devotional object, ideal for collectors, scholars, or spiritual interiors.
