Description

This finely cast bronze Buddha represents a Northern Thai interpretation of the Bhumisparsha (“Earth-touching”) gesture, symbolising the moment of enlightenment. The face displays broad eyelids and soft cheeks, reflecting the regional synthesis between Lan Na and early Ayutthaya styles around 1700–1750.

The ushnisha rises in a tall flame form — a signature trait of North-Thai craftsmanship — while the hair curls are individually formed and oxidised. The open, ornamental base with stylised flames shows traces of original gilding and temple wear. Under magnification, the surface reveals granular fire-gilded texture and naturally aged oxidation without any modern restoration.

Such bronzes were traditionally cast for temple veneration and often placed on high wooden altars. Their restrained expression and technical casting quality distinguish them from later mass-produced Rattanakosin images.
