Bronze Buddhist Relief – Mucalinda Buddha under the Naga, Lanna Kingdom (ca. 16th–17th Century)
Description
This finely cast bronze relief shows the Buddha seated in meditation under the protective hood of the Naga Mucalinda — a sacred image symbolising inner peace amid chaos.
The piece originates from the Lanna Kingdom (Northern Thailand) and dates to the 16th–17th century.
It was cast in solid tin-bronze using traditional sand moulds and retains traces of original fire gilding.
Microscopic and UV analysis confirm authentic corrosion, mineralisation, and centuries of natural oxidation.
No modern coatings, soldering or patina are present; several small perforations and open crystal zones testify to genuine metal ageing.
This type of votive relief would have been placed behind a small shrine or carried as a portable altar image, representing the protective compassion of the Buddha.
