Description

This rare and authentic Thai wooden Buddha panel dates to the late Ayutthaya period (circa 1680–1720). Measuring H 50 x W 25 cm and weighing approximately 2 kg, it is finely hand-carved from hardwood with remnants of the original polychromy and gold leaf still visible.

The panel depicts Buddha Shakyamuni seated in Padmasana (full lotus) within a delicately carved flame-shaped niche. The elongated earlobes, the high flame ushnisha, and the flowing diagonal robe style are consistent with late Ayutthaya-period iconography, reflecting spiritual tranquility and divine presence.

Condition & Authenticity:

  • Original 17th–18th century craftsmanship

  • No modern tooling marks, no synthetic coatings

  • Visible aged mineral pigments, natural oxidation, and dust inclusions confirm authenticity

  • Microscopic examination confirms traditional bole layer and authentic polychrome techniques

Spiritual Significance:

This devotional panel would have originally adorned a temple wall or home altar, serving as a focal point for meditation and spiritual practice. It represents peace, enlightenment, and the timeless teachings of the Buddha.
