Description

This small yet finely cast antique Buddha depicts the gesture of Abhaya Mudra, the symbol of reassurance and spiritual strength. Made from a copper-based alloy, the surface shows clear remnants of original gilding applied by mercury amalgam technique, visible in protected recesses and between the folds. The metal beneath has oxidised naturally over time, developing a warm, aged patina with small mineral deposits. Such pieces were often kept on private household altars or as travelling icons, valued for their intimate devotional presence rather than monumental size. The proportions and simplified robe style suggest a regional Himalayan or northern Indian tradition from the late 19th to early 20th century.
