Validation Report

This West Tibetan Buddha statue has been examined using microscopic scratch analysis and surface observation. The exposed metal in scratch zones shows a dark oxidised core with tin-rich lamellae, confirming a copper–tin bronze alloy and excluding brass. The golden surface residues are original mercury fire gilding integrated into the metal pores, not modern paint or coating. Multi-layered patina, mineral deposits and wear patterns are consistent with long-term natural ageing and pre-industrial casting practice. The facial structure, robe treatment, lotus base and overall proportions correspond to 17th century West Tibetan and Ladakhi workshop traditions.

Description

This 17th century West Tibetan Buddha is cast in copper-tin bronze and originally finished with fire gilding. Traces of the gilded surface remain visible across the robe and torso. The sculpture shows the typical West Tibetan facial structure, elongated fingers, simple robe lines and a compact lotus base. The casting is pre-industrial, with natural oxidation, mineral deposits and age-consistent wear. The overall form, proportions and patina support a dating within the 1600–1700 period.

Dimensions: height 37 cm, width 26 cm. Weight: 4.1 kg.
