Rare 13th–14th century Ladakh / Western Tibetan Avalokiteshvara Sahasrabhuja pair
Description
Rare Pair of Avalokiteshvara Sahasrabhuja – Ladakh / Western Tibet, 13th–14th Century
This exceptionally rare pair of standing Avalokiteshvara Sahasrabhuja statues originates from Ladakh or Western Tibet and dates to the 13th–14th century (ca. 1300–1350). Crafted in fire-gilded bronze, the thousand-armed form signifies universal compassion and protective power from all directions.
Dimensions & Weight
- Larger figure: H 21 × W 12 cm, 540 g
- Smaller figure: H 19 × W 9 cm, 400 g
Material & Condition
Both figures are fire-gilded bronze with mineral-based oxidation and cuprite crystal growth. Microscopic analysis confirms original gilding layers preserved in recessed zones beneath dark patina. Traces of organic matter within the bases are consistent with centuries of traditional ritual use. Surfaces are unrestored, showing honest wear expected of early Himalayan bronzes.
Note: The statues no longer present as fully gilt to the naked eye; however, microscope images clearly document authentic fire-gilding remnants, supporting age and originality.
Provenance
Kept together as a pair since the 1970s, when acquired from an antique dealer in Amsterdam. While the two figures may not originate from the same workshop, their documented association of over 50 years provides historical continuity and justifies their presentation as a pair.
Significance
Traditionally employed to safeguard sacred spaces and bring healing and guidance, these figures stand as rare survivors of early Buddhist metalwork from Ladakh and Tibet, offering both spiritual resonance and cultural importance.
Valuation & Offering
Comparable early Himalayan bronzes have achieved tens of thousands of euros at international auctions, even for single figures of smaller size. Based on the microscopic documentation and long-standing provenance, a conservative retail guidance for the pair would be €30,000–€40,000.
Current asking price: €24,000 — a clearly under-market opportunity for collectors, galleries, or institutions.
