Ritual Brass Mask – Nepal, 19th Century – Hand-Hammered Repoussé
Description
This antique Nepalese ritual mask was crafted entirely by hand from a single sheet of brass and shaped with repoussé and chasing tools. Its thin, resonant structure (only around 400 grams) and irregular perforations along the rim indicate traditional manufacture for attachment to textile or leather harnesses during ritual or festival use.
Microscopic and UV examination confirm a stable dark patina of copper and zinc oxides, with calcite and mineral traces embedded in the surface. No modern coatings, paint, or gilding are present. The hammered texture and natural deformation of the sheet are consistent with pre-industrial craftsmanship from the Himalayan region.
The mask retains its original integrity and presents the sober, archaic expression typical of Tamang and Kathmandu Valley ritual art. It represents a rare surviving example of authentic Himalayan repoussé metalwork from the 19th century.
