Description
Large Antique Wooden Buddha Statue – Mandalay, Myanmar
This monumental seated Buddha statue originates from the Mandalay region of Myanmar and dates back to the mid to late 19th century. Carved from solid tropical hardwood, it features inlaid eyes with dark stone pupils, intricate scrollwork, original glass and mirror inlays, and residual gold leaf gilding over a red bole layer, in keeping with traditional Burmese iconography.
Despite its age and visible signs of wear—including structural cracks, pigment loss, and missing inlays—the statue retains its powerful presence and authenticity. The unique use of ivory for the eyes, confirmed under UV and microscopic inspection, significantly elevates the rarity and prestige of this piece compared to other Mandalay Buddhas of the period. The base construction includes traditional iron pin joining, typical of 19th-century Mandalay craftsmanship.
120 cm high and 99 cm wide, and weighing an estimated 80–90 kilograms, this is a monumental devotional sculpture suitable for museum collections or advanced connoisseurs of Southeast Asian Buddhist art.
