Description

Pair of Bronze Seated Buddha Statues – Java, Indonesia, ca. 18th–19th Century

This is a rare matched pair of bronze Buddha statues from Java, Indonesia, dating to the late 18th – early 19th century. Both figures are seated on stylized lotus pedestals, with finely cast robes, serene facial features, and symbolic mudras. They stand as powerful examples of Javanese Buddhist artistry, influenced by Thai and Burmese aesthetics.

The right hand of each Buddha is raised in Vitarka Mudra (gesture of teaching), while the left rests in Dhyana Mudra (meditation). The harmonious proportions and symmetrical modeling emphasize balance and inner peace, while traces of fire gilding in the recesses reveal their original ritual brilliance.

Technical inspection confirms traditional hollow-casting with sand-filled cavities, natural patina development, and residual gilding particles visible under UV light and microscopy. The surfaces carry green, black, and white oxidation deposits, consistent with long-term age and tropical storage.
