This wooden guardian mask from Nepal was examined using museum-grade analytical methods including surface inspection, UV response review where applicable and high-magnification microscopy. The object presents natural aged patina, structural age cracks, traditional hand-carved modelling and an original cloth backing consistent with household protector masks from the Himalayan region.

Description

This Himalayan wooden guardian mask was carved in Nepal around 1880–1920 and represents a traditional domestic protective figure used in the hill regions. The mask is cut from a single block of hardwood, with deep-set eyes, a pronounced triangular nose and a recessed mouth opening typical of rural Nepali household protectors. The surface shows naturally developed patina, weathering and long-term age cracks consistent with exposure in mountain environments.

The reverse retains an old cloth backing, a feature commonly associated with household placement rather than dance use, and the side perforations indicate its original method of suspension. There is no evidence of modern finishing, artificial colouring or recent intervention. These masks form part of the vernacular artistic and spiritual heritage of Nepal and were produced for practical, protective use within village settings.
