Description

Old South Indian Fire-Gilded Bronze Ganesha (Ganapati)

A substantial South Indian bronze of Ganesha, an old workshop piece cast by the traditional lost-wax method and retaining traces of fire gilding. Ganesha sits in lalitāsana (royal ease), holding sweetmeats, a goad, a noose and his broken tusk; his rat vehicle (mūṣika) appears at the base. The figure rests on a square stepped pedestal with subsidiary figures in niches.
