Fire-Gilded Bronze Buddha Statue – Nepal, ca. 1850 – 1900
Description
This finely cast Buddha statue originates from Nepal and dates to around 1850–1900.
The figure is modeled in classic Kathmandu style, with a serene expression and a delicately engraved robe decorated with scrolling lotus and tendril motifs.
Microscopic inspection confirms the presence of authentic 24 kt fire gilding, applied by the traditional mercury-amalgam process.
The surface exhibits the typical sintered texture, natural oxidation, and micro-porous transitions that develop only in historical gilding.
Over time, the gilded areas have oxidized into a deep brown patina, while gold remains visible in protected recesses around the head, lips, and robe folds.
The casting shows a single-block construction with traces of the inner clay core and genuine age patination inside the base.
No signs of modern tooling, lacquer, or restoration are present.
This is a representative and authentic Nepalese temple sculpture from the 19th century.
