Description

Rare 18th–19th Century Nepalese Bronze of Tara with Lotus (19.5 cm)

This finely detailed bronze depicts Tara, the revered Buddhist goddess of compassion and swift protection. She is shown seated in full lotus posture (padmasana) upon a double-lotus base, her right hand extended in the gesture of generosity (varadamudra), while her left hand delicately supports the stem of a closed lotus bud (utpala).

The figure displays the elegant proportions and refined ornamentation typical of Newar bronze casting in the Kathmandu Valley during the 18th–19th centuries. Her tall crown, jeweled necklaces, and subtle facial expression convey a serene yet powerful presence. The closed lotus, a symbol of purity and spiritual unfolding, confirms her identity as Tara rather than Avalokiteshvara.

Microscopic and UV examination reveal natural age patina and traces of original gilding preserved within recessed areas, consistent with centuries of devotional use. The sealed base, fine casting lines, and absence of modern alterations further support its authenticity.

At 19.5 cm high and weighing 900 g, this devotional bronze would have been suitable for both personal altar practice and monastic shrines. Its delicate balance between grace and strength reflects the distinctive artistry of the Newar craftsmen, whose works were highly sought after throughout Tibet and the Western Himalayas.

An authentic and well-preserved Himalayan bronze, this Tara represents not only a sacred presence for practitioners but also a significant example of Nepalese metalwork for collectors and scholars alike.
