Standing Buddha with Alms Bowl – Thailand, ca. 1800–1850
Description
This remarkable 19th-century bronze statue depicts the Buddha in a rare combination of gestures: the right hand raised in Abhaya Mudra (gesture of reassurance and protection), while the left hand holds an alms bowl, evoking the simplicity and humility of the monastic life. This pose is deeply symbolic in Theravāda Buddhism, representing spiritual detachment, discipline, and compassion toward all sentient beings.
The figure is 29 cm high and weighs approximately 900 grams, solidly cast using the traditional sand-casting technique. The base is fully sealed, indicating a devotional function. Under UV and microscopic analysis, traces of authentic mercury gilding (fire gilding) are visible in protected zones such as the curls and rim of the bowl — with subtle white-blue fluorescence confirming its age and composition.
The surface reveals a natural aged patina, including granular oxidation, deep pitting, and structural copper crystal formation. No signs of modern coatings, repainting, or restoration are present. These features confirm its authenticity and over 150 years of historical aging.
Stylistically, the statue aligns with the early Rattanakosin period (post-Ayutthaya), likely originating from central Thailand. It was originally intended for domestic or monastic devotional use, and the wear on the face and bowl suggests gentle ritual handling.
An exceptional and spiritually resonant piece, ideal for collectors of Buddhist art or those seeking an original sacred presence for their space.
