Description

Ritual Wooden Guardian Figure – Tualen / Semar – Bali or Java, ca. 1880–1920

This striking 67 cm wooden figure represents Tualen (also known as Semar), the wise and spiritually potent clown-servant from Javanese and Balinese tradition. It is hand-carved from a single block of tropical hardwood and decorated with aged red, black, and green mineral pigments. The expressive face, towering headdress, and painted robe reflect a sacred role in domestic or temple rituals.

Despite a vertical structural crack and minor damage at the base and shoulder, the figure remains untouched and retains its authentic devotional presence. Microscopic inspection confirms old layered pigments with no modern restoration or coating. Under UV light, the surface fluoresces dully — typical of organic pigments from the late 19th century.

Originally used as a guardian or ritual object, this figure embodies both protection and wisdom through humor. It is a rare and culturally rich collectible with spiritual depth.
