Large Japanese Moriage Satsuma Jardinière with Court Scene, Floral and Goldfish Decoration, Meiji–Taisho Period (circa 1890–1920)
Description
This exceptional Japanese Moriage Satsuma jardinière dates from the Meiji to Taisho period (circa 1890–1920) and reflects the pinnacle of Japanese ceramic artistry for export and domestic display. Standing at over 90 cm tall with its wooden base and weighing 16 kg, it is both a commanding decorative object and a finely executed piece of historical art.
The exterior showcases a meticulously hand-painted court scene, surrounded by floral borders, all highlighted with raised moriage enamel dots in multicolored glazes. Extensive gilding adds luminous contrast, especially around the robes, headdresses, and ornamental motifs. The interior of the vessel presents a rare touch: delicate goldfish swimming among aquatic plants, symbolizing abundance, fortune, and peace in East Asian tradition.
Executed with natural craquelure glaze and no industrial markings, this jardinière was likely a high-quality export piece, or a custom commission. No maker’s seal is present—common for fine wares of the time made in or inspired by Jingdezhen and Satsuma kilns.
Whether displayed in a collector’s interior, spiritual setting, or as a standalone art object, this jardinière offers both visual richness and cultural depth.
