Description

This large Himalayan limestone temple Buddha statue was originally installed in a shrine or monastery setting, where it functioned as a devotional image for ritual practice. Carved from a single block of stone, the Buddha appears seated in meditation within a deeply sculpted aureole filled with miniature figures, a format typical of temple steles rather than domestic art.

The base is designed as a sacred foundation, with a central lotus-framed face, flanking guardian figures and a serpent head linked to Naga symbolism. These protective motifs reflect the sculpture’s original purpose inside a temple complex, where such imagery ensured spiritual protection and reinforced the sanctity of the Buddha image.

Traces of blue pigment in the hair, as well as red and green mineral pigments on the base, confirm that the statue was once fully painted. These pigments are absorbed into the porous stone and show the natural ageing patterns associated with genuine ritual use and long-term exposure. The softened contours, weathered surfaces and original tool marks all support its interpretation as an 18th–19th century Himalayan temple sculpture.

With its height of 122 cm and powerful visual presence, this is a significant and authentic example of Himalayan religious stone art, suitable for collectors seeking a true temple-origin piece with documented age and character.
