Chinese Guanyin Wooden Temple Sculpture – Polychrome

This large standing sculpture represents Guanyin, the bodhisattva of compassion, one of the most beloved figures in East Asian Buddhist tradition. The figure stands calmly with the hands gathered before the body, a gesture associated with serenity, protection and compassion.

The sculpture is carved from wood and was originally finished with layers of mineral pigments. Remnants of white, red and darker tones remain visible across the surface, creating a beautiful aged polychrome appearance. The crackled paint layers and worn areas reveal the natural aging of the surface and give the sculpture the atmosphere of an authentic temple object.

The robe falls in long flowing folds around the body, showing the hand carved quality of the sculpture. The calm facial expression and soft proportions reflect the traditional Chinese representation of Guanyin as a compassionate and serene presence.

With its height of 80 cm, this standing Guanyin sculpture has a strong vertical presence and works beautifully as a centerpiece in an interior or as part of a collection of Asian religious art.
