Large 18th–19th Century Reclining Bronze Buddha – Lan Xang Region

Description

This large and expressive reclining Buddha statue originates from the Lan Xang region — historically spanning parts of modern-day Laos and northeast Thailand. Dated to approximately 1750–1830, the statue depicts the Buddha in Parinirvana — his final, enlightened state before leaving the physical world.

Expertly cast in solid high-copper bronze, the piece measures 77 cm in length, 30 cm in height, and weighs approximately 5.5 kilograms. It displays a naturally aged surface, deep oxidation, and subtle remnants of original fire-gilding, visible under UV analysis. The stylized flame-shaped ushnisha, elongated limbs, and calm facial features are typical of Lan Xang devotional art from the late 18th to early 19th century.

This statue is not only an aesthetic focal point but a spiritual symbol representing impermanence, peace, and transcendence. A rare opportunity for collectors of Southeast Asian Buddhist art.
