Kneeling Devotional Figure – Late 19th to Early 20th Century, Thailand
Description
This expressive bronze figure represents a kneeling devotee in Anjali Mudra — the gesture of reverent greeting, prayer, and spiritual offering. With both hands pressed together at the chest, the pose symbolizes humility, inner stillness, and respect. Traditionally, such figures were placed at the entrance of Thai temples or flanking altars, acting as spiritual guardians and symbols of devotion.
Cast in Thailand between 1880 and 1920 using the traditional lost-wax method, the sculpture features fine ornamental details including a stylized crown, layered garments, and temple-style jewelry. Its surface has developed a natural green-blue patina, and remnants of the original fire gilding are still visible in protected areas, confirming its ritual use and age.
This kneeling figure is not merely decorative—it holds deep symbolic function. Its posture evokes selfless offering and aligns the viewer with a state of reverence and peace. In Thai Buddhist context, such figures often represent devotees or protective attendants positioned in eternal prayer before a Buddha image.
