Japanese bronze koro incense burner dating to the Meiji period, richly decorated with dragon and cloud relief panels. The piece stands on four feet with two traditional side handles and retains traces of original gilding within the decoration. The pierced lid allows incense smoke to escape beautifully, while the top finial remains attached but slightly movable. The dark aged patina combined with visible gilding traces gives the piece a strong historic character typical of Japanese bronze workshop production

This Japanese bronze koro incense burner dates to the Meiji period (late 19th to early 20th century) and represents the refined bronze craftsmanship for which Japanese metal workshops became widely admired. The vessel has a strong ceremonial form with a rectangular body resting on four feet and flanked by two elegant side handles.

Each side is richly decorated with high-relief panels depicting dragons moving through swirling clouds, a traditional symbol of power, protection, and spiritual energy in East Asian art. The relief carving shows fine hand-finished details and natural wear consistent with age. Within the recessed areas of the decoration, traces of original gilding remain visible, creating a beautiful contrast against the deep, dark bronze patina that developed over time.

The domed lid is pierced to allow incense smoke to escape during ritual use. It is topped with a decorative finial in a stylized lotus or flame motif, a form commonly associated with Buddhist symbolism. The finial remains attached but is slightly movable, which is not unusual for antique incense burners that have been used over many decades.

Koro incense burners such as this were traditionally used in Buddhist temples and household altars for the burning of incense during meditation, prayer, and ceremonial offerings. Today they are equally appreciated as decorative objects and collectors’ pieces, admired for their craftsmanship, symbolism, and timeless presence.

With its balanced proportions, aged patina, and surviving traces of gilding, this piece carries the historic character typical of Meiji-period Japanese bronzes.
