Fire-Gilded Bronze Ganesha – Thailand, ca. 1800–1850
Description
This impressive bronze statue represents Ganesha, the remover of obstacles and patron of wisdom and the arts. Created in Thailand around 1800–1850, the deity is portrayed seated in calm dignity upon a double lotus throne, holding ritual attributes in four hands.
The surface displays remains of genuine fire gilding, with the warm golden tone characteristic of 24 kt gold applied through the traditional mercury amalgam process.
Under magnification, the surface reveals natural mineral encrustations and oxidation typical of pre-industrial bronze casting. The underside is closed, showing old casting marks and residual core material. The sculptural detailing in the crown, jewelry, and base reflects early Rattanakosin workmanship and high ritual quality.
