Description

Large Bronze Buddha Statue – Java, 18th–19th Century

Java (Indonesia), circa 1750–1850 – H 58 cm × W 44 cm, 8 kg

This impressive bronze statue depicts the Buddha seated in the Bhumisparsha mudra, the earth-touching gesture symbolizing enlightenment. The sculpture originates from Java and dates to the late 18th or early 19th century. Measuring 58 cm in height and 44 cm in width, the piece weighs 8 kilograms.

The Buddha’s serene expression and flowing robe are characteristic of Javanese interpretations influenced by classical Thai and Southeast Asian traditions. Under UV light, remnants of the original fire gilding are visible, confirming traditional techniques used in its creation.

The statue is hollow-cast in bronze and exhibits natural surface oxidation, especially in recessed areas, contributing to its authenticity and historical depth. The surface has not been artificially restored or polished, preserving its original aged character.

This piece is ideal for sacred spaces, private altars, or as a centerpiece for collectors seeking a distinctive and historically significant Southeast Asian Buddha image.

The smooth and lustrous surface results from a previous cleaning treatment, during which overpaint and later patina layers were removed. This has revealed the original bronze surface and preserved traces of historic gilding.

Under 365nm UV light, the surface displays the typical yellow-green fluorescence associated with remnants of historical fire gilding and natural copper oxidation. This confirms the traditional gilding method and supports the estimated age of the piece.
