West African Bamana Ritual Mask Wood Early 20th century 59 cm Lot 436
Large hand carved West African ritual mask from Mali. Executed in solid wood with strong vertical proportions and deep natural patina from ritual use. Early twentieth century.
This large West African ritual mask originates from Mali and belongs to the Bamana Bambara sculptural tradition. The mask is carved from a single solid block of wood and displays a tall elongated face with closed almond shaped eyes, a pronounced nose and a restrained stylised mouth. These features reflect a ritual aesthetic focused on inner strength, discipline and spiritual balance rather than decorative appeal.
The surface shows a deep dark brown patina that has developed naturally through handling, ritual use and age. Wear is consistent and concentrated on raised areas, with no signs of modern tooling, sanding or artificial ageing. The rear displays clear hand tool marks typical of traditional adze work.
The vertical crest with lateral extensions is an integral symbolic element rather than ornamentation and is associated with authority and spiritual mediation within Bamana ritual contexts. The overall construction, proportions and surface characteristics confirm this mask as an authentic ritual object rather than later decorative or tourist production.
Dating is placed in the early twentieth century, circa 1900 to 1930. The size, quality of carving and strong presence make this a highly representative example of Bamana ritual art.
