Authentic wooden temple figure from South China (ca. 1800–1850)

Description

This authentic wooden temple figure hails from South China (likely Fujian or Guangdong) and dates to around 1800–1850. Hand-carved from a single block of tropical hardwood, the figure represents a divine official or donor, seated with a calm and protective expression.

The sculpture shows clear evidence of original gilt decoration and mineral-based red pigments, along with a rich natural patina and surface craquelure. Microscopic analysis confirms there are no modern restorations or artificial aging – this is a genuine antique with deep spiritual meaning.

Iconography: The long moustache and beard symbolize wisdom and longevity, while the official headband and seated posture highlight the social and ceremonial status of the figure. Such images were traditionally revered in South Chinese temples as protectors of the community and symbols of prosperity.

Dimensions: Height 43 cm, Width 22 cm, Weight 2.4 kg. The subtle soot marks and natural wear point to long-term use in a temple or domestic altar setting.

This rare example of folk-religious Buddhist sculpture from the late Qing Dynasty offers both spiritual presence and cultural value – a significant addition to any collection or Asian-themed interior.
