18th–19th Century Bronze Buddha Head – Fire-Gilded Himalayan Meditation Icon

Description

This bronze Buddha head originates from Nepal or Northern India (Himalayan region), dating to circa 1750–1850. Measuring H 12 x W 8 cm and weighing 300 g, it displays classic features of Shakyamuni Buddha: a peaceful expression, elongated earlobes, and an upward flame ushnisha symbolizing enlightenment and spiritual awakening.

The head was hollow-cast using traditional Himalayan techniques. Under UV light and microscopic analysis, residual gold from original fire gilding and mineral-based oxidation confirm its authenticity and age. The broken ear and granular oxidation visible through the opening at the left temple underscore the object’s unrestored, authentic condition.

Key Features:

  • Hollow-cast bronze with natural patina

  • Spiral curls and urna clearly defined

  • Deep greenish and black patina, no modern coatings

  • Fire gilding residues in recessed areas

  • One ear intact, the other broken (no repairs)

Spiritual and Cultural Significance:

This head likely belonged to a larger temple or devotional statue. The meditative expression and detailed craftsmanship reflect centuries of spiritual devotion and Himalayan artistry.

A rare and powerful devotional fragment that brings an aura of calm and history to any collection or sacred space.
