Antique Guanyin Statue – Southern China, Late Qing
Description
This large antique wooden Guanyin statue originates from Southern China, dating to the late Qing to early Republican period (circa 1880–1920). Standing 88 cm high, 25.5 cm wide, and weighing 15.2 kg, it is hand-carved from a single massive block of tropical hardwood (monoxyl construction).
Guanyin, the Bodhisattva of Compassion, is depicted seated in a relaxed pose, one knee drawn up, with a serene expression. She wears polychrome paint layers in blue, pink, red, cream, and green. The paint has been partially renewed in the mid-20th century, but original layers and natural wear remain visible.
Key Features:
Monoxyl (single-block) hardwood carving
Original and later polychrome paint layers
Deep age cracks, woodworm traces, and natural oxidation
UV analysis confirms historic pigments and varnish
Regional style typical of Guangdong or Fujian Buddhist art
Condition:
Structurally stable with age-consistent wear, repainting, and minor damages to the face and hands. Underside untreated, showing natural oxidation and insect channels.
Historical Context:
Guanyin was—and still is—venerated as a guardian and compassionate intercessor in Chinese Buddhism. This large devotional sculpture would have served in a temple or home shrine, offering both spiritual comfort and artistic beauty.
An authentic and striking devotional piece for collectors of Buddhist art, Asian antiques, or religious sculpture.
