Description
Antique South Indian Lakshmi and Vishnu Carved Panel – ca. 1780–1820
This rare and authentic South Indian wooden panel represents Lakshmi and Vishnu, skillfully carved from solid teakwood (Tectona grandis) and dating back to approximately 1780–1820. Originating from Tamil Nadu, this sculpture was likely used within a temple setting, mounted on a door or sanctum wall.
The surface still retains traces of original red, pink, and blue mineral pigments, particularly on the nails and ornaments — a sacred South Indian ritual practice known as kumkum or sindoor application. Under UV-light inspection, an old paper label fluoresces blue-white, confirming its pre-1940 origin and supporting the historical dating.
