Description
Antique Peacock-Shaped Ritual Container – India, ca. 1750–1830
This rare antique ritual container is crafted in the form of a stylized peacock – a sacred and symbolic animal in South Asian religious traditions. Originating from India and dating to the late 18th or early 19th century, it was likely used to store sacred ash, ritual powders, or devotional offerings.
Cast from bronze using traditional sand-casting or lost-wax techniques, the container features finely engraved plumage patterns, a hinged lid with clasp, and a body shape that mimics the proud stance of a peacock. The surface shows natural oxidation, malachite growth, and traces of fire-gilding — evidence of authentic age and devotional handling.
Microscopic analysis confirms that no modern coatings or restorations are present. Residual mineral layers and reddish-yellow corrosion are consistent with historical ritual use. The symbolic presence of the peacock represents immortality, divine protection, and spiritual transformation in both Hindu and Buddhist iconography.
